CRUSTÁCEOS DECÁPODOS ASOCIADOS A Millepora spp. (CNIDARIA: HYDROZOA) EN PLAYA EL AMPARO, ISLA DE COCHE, ESTADO NUEVA ESPARTA, VENEZUELA

Abstract

Corals and false corals are organisms that add complexity and diversity to the environment, by providing different species of substrate to fixate on, caves, crevices or interstices to take shelter. The organisms most frequently associated with false corals of the genus Millepora belong mainly to the group of crustaceans. As a contribution to the knowledge of the diversity of decapod crustaceans associated with this type of substrate, samplings were carried out between April 2017 and October 2018 at El Amparo Beach, Coche Island, Venezuela. The collection of the specimens was carried out up to approximately 2 m deep, using as capture methods the manual extraction of pieces of coral detached by climatic events or anthropic effects; these were placed in containers with seawater and transferred to the coast where the decapod crustaceans present were manually extracted. A total of 95 crustaceans belonging to eight species of Caridea, five of Anomura, three of Brachyura, one Stenopodidea and one Achelata were analyzed. Three species, Calcinus tibicen, Heteractaea ceratopus and Stenorhynchus seticornis represents new additions to the carcinofauna of Coche Island. 66% of the total abundance of decapods present in this false coral was represented by the species Petrolisthes armatus with 25% (24 ind); Pachycheles monilifer 21% (20 ind) and Mithraculus forceps 20% (19 ind), the rest of the species presented a relative abundance less than 10%.
